St. Francis de Sales
St. Francis de Sales (1567-1622), a French bishop and Doctor of the Church, is widely recognised for his contributions to Christian spirituality, pastoral care, and education. While he may not be directly associated with modern concepts of work-based learning, his teachings, philosophy, and approach to education provide a valuable framework for understanding the importance of integrating faith, learning, and practical experience.
St. Francis de Sales advocated for an education that was holistic, emphasising the development of the whole person — mind, body, and spirit. His approach to education was not merely about the acquisition of knowledge but about forming individuals in virtue and character. This perspective aligns closely with the modern concept of work-based learning, which seeks to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical experience, fostering the development of both technical skills and personal qualities such as responsibility, diligence, and ethical behaviour.
St. John Bosco, the Italian educator of the 19th century, was inspired by St. Francis de Sales, especially for his gentle approach. He adopted St. Francis as the patron saint of the Religious Congregation he founded, whom, in fact, he called “Salesians.”
Don Bosco Foundation
St. Francis de Sales Institute is part of the Don Bosco Foundation. This Foundation is a philanthropic organisation committed to focusing on the needs and education of children and young people, especially those who are poor, vulnerable, or abandoned. Through the support of social and educational projects, we aim to promote the welfare and development of young people by fostering opportunities that prioritise their best interests. The Foundation also promotes and supports the network of Salesian Voluntary Organisations by training and equipping volunteers to meaningfully contribute to their efforts, while strengthening the capacity of our network of 14 registered organisations. Our services offer various opportunities where volunteers can engage in impactful work, aligned with their unique experiences and aspirations, to create a brighter future for children and youth.
