Holistic Education and the Development of Virtue

In work-based learning, students are not only gaining skills specific to their trade or profession but are also learning to navigate real-world challenges, make ethical decisions, and develop a strong work ethic. These aspects resonate with St. Francis de Sales’ emphasis on character formation and virtue.

Gentleness and Humility in Learning

One of the hallmark virtues promoted by St. Francis de Sales was gentleness, a quality he believed was essential in spiritual life. Inspired by this, St. John Bosco encouraged educators to approach students with patience and kindness, understanding their individual needs and helping them to grow at their own pace. St. John Bosco saw gentleness and humility as essential in both teaching and learning.

Integrating Faith and Work

St. Francis de Sales was a strong advocate for integrating faith into every aspect of life, including work. He believed that all work, no matter how mundane, could be a means of sanctification if done with love and devotion. This perspective is particularly relevant to work-based learning, where the integration of personal values, ethics, and professional responsibilities is crucial.

Lifelong Learning

Inspired by St. Francis de Sales, St. John Bosco emphasised the importance of lifelong learning, not just in the accumulating of knowledge but in the continual pursuit of holiness. He believed that education did not end with formal schooling but continued throughout life (non-formal learning) as individuals grew in their understanding of faith, their vocation, and their place in the world.
